FallHuntingTrips- What you'll need

The key to hunting in the mountains is layering. Riding out of camp in the morning you may want to wear every bit of clothing you have, but once we start hiking you’ll likely remove some layers. Weather conditions on backcountry hunts can range from sunny and in the 70’s earlier in the season to snowing and 10 degrees or cooler later in the year. The best way to prepare for your hunt is to bring many medium-to-lightweight layers that can be worn together or separately, depending on the conditions.

  • Montana State Hunting License
  • Soft, zippered duffel bag to pack personal items
  • Sleeping bag (zero degree rating or better)
  • One set of lightweight camo (for hunts from Sept – Oct)
  • One set of warm camo (wool or other synthetic material)
  • Long underwear (2-3 sets)
  • Two wool or synthetic shirts
  • Wool or down vest
  • One medium weight jacket
  • One set of quiet rain gear
  • 9 pairs of wool socks (NO COTTON!)
  • Boots (ideally two pairs – both should be broken in, have good tread, good ankle support, and be comfortable to hike in all day. We prefer a hiking boot style in warmer weather and an insulated rubber bottom “packer” style boot with a removable liner in the cold and snow. We wear and recommend Schnee’s Boots – see Clothing & Equipment Outfitters.)
  • One pair of camp shoes (sneakers)
  • Two hats (one warm hat and one with a brim to shade the sun)Mountains
  • Two pairs of warm, insulated gloves
  • Hunter orange vest (Montana law requires 400 square inches to be visible)
  • Towel for showering
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Smaller size daypack (needs to carry your lunch, water, extra socks, extra warm layers, and a knife.  Bags do not need to be large; the smaller the better, you’ll be wearing this pack all day and when riding on a horse.)
  • Binoculars (10 x 40 power preferred)
  • Headlamp and extra batteries
  • Water bottles (ideally a Camelback style water bladder or two water bottles)
  • Rifle
  • Rifle rounds
  • Knife
  • Camera
